Joylyn "Joy" Murphy Zembower died on November 10, 2021 at The Parkdale Senior and Assisted Living Center in Mount Clemens, MI. She was born on August 8, 1928 to the late Florence Miller Murphy and George Murphy in Erie, PA. Joy was predeceased by her beloved husband W. Glenn Zembower, her son-in-law Greg West, and her siblings Doug Murphy, Mark Murphy, George Murphy and Marilyn Woodel, and several nieces and nephews. Surviving are her three children and their families: son Barry (Pat) Zembower of Erie, PA; daughters Becky Zembower (Steve Stoney) of Anchorage, AK, Darcie West of Mount Clemens, MI; granddaughters Bailey Zembower Borrow (Gary Borrow) of Pittsburgh, PA, Megan Zembower of Seattle, WA, and Mallory (Jamie) Carroll of Mooresboro, NC; grandson Brian (Stephanie) West of Grand Blanc MI; and 5 great-grandchildren Max and Lee Carroll and Matthew, Micah, and Jane West. Joy graduated from Strong Vincent High School in Erie, PA, and then earned her Associates Degree from Grove City College, PA, where she met Glenn, who she later married on February 2, 1952. They moved to Cumberland, MD in 1961 where they opened Zembower's Hardware which they operated for 25 years before retiring and spending many years traveling and playing golf. Joy was an active volunteer her entire life, spending more than 55 years as a hospital and hospice volunteer. She also served on the Cumberland Recreation Board for many years. Joy helped in multiple capacities with the Cumberland YMCA youth swim team for many years and later as a determined competitor with their Masters swim team. Joy also coached hundreds of youth as the Constitution Park summer swim team coach for many, many years. Additionally, she was an active church member and volunteer at St Paul's Lutheran Church for decades. Joy and Glenn were long-time members of the Cumberland Country Club where Joy was active with the ladies golf association. Visitation will be Thursday, November 18 from 3:30 to 7 pm at Saint Paul's Lutheran Church, corner of Washington and Smallwood streets, Cumberland, with a service to be held there Friday morning, November 19, at 10. Interment will be at 12 noon at the Rocky Gap Veterans Cemetery. The family requests that masks be worn at both the visitation and the funeral service. Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A. will be handling arrangements. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions in Joy's memory be made to UPMC Western Maryland Hospice Services, or to your local Hospice Services provider.
