Juanita M. Wright, "Susie," A Legacy of Love, Style, and Courage

Juanita M. Wright, affectionately known as "Susie," of Cumberland, Maryland, left us on October 26, 2026 her departure leaves a legacy marked by compassion, joy, and an unmistakable flair for life.

Born on July 21, 1939, in Lisbon, Ohio, to Carl and Mae Robbins. She acquired her nickname from her doting father, who affectionately called her "Susie Q." Susie's childhood with her older brother Buck was a canvas of enchanting moments, from gathering wintergreen in the shores of Lake Koon while her father fished, tap dancing at Mary Kathryn's dance studio, even rescuing baby skunks. Her kindness toward creatures big and small began early, as did her ability to find delight in the world around her.

Graduating from Fort Hill High School in 1957, she entered the world with a unique vision. She attended cosmetologist school and graduated to a hairstylist, her impeccable sense of style trademarked by her platinum blonde hair, and glints of silver jewelry. A lifelong teetotaler Susie always chose Coca-Cola over spirits, often outdancing those around her and usually having way more fun.

In 1963, she married Donovan Wright and embraced the role of a devoted wife and mother to their daughter, Christina, demonstrating profound love and commitment. Her relationship with Christina was deep, highlighted by shared interests in horseback riding, crafting, and active involvement in 4-H. During Tina's early years much time was spent at home caring for their beloved animals, especially horses Tonka and Prince.

In 1976, Susie joined the Cumberland YMCA's wellness staff, where she led and participated in fitness classes ranging from belly dancing to Jane Fonda aerobics. She retired from the YMCA in 2006 after dedicating 30 years of service to the community.

A breast cancer survivor, Susie's resilience and strength were an inspiration to all.

In her "retirement" she was a masterful gardener, transforming her expansive yard into magical nooks, each with its unique charm-a testament to her artistic eye and love for nature. Susie's life was sprinkled with a touch of magic, her belief in fairies was a sign of her whimsy, and a reflection of her deep connection to the natural world and its unseen wonders. This sense of enchantment was woven into the fabric of her being.

Her extensive costume closet was a treasure trove of imagination, making every Halloween an opportunity to step into a world of fantasy and fun. Susie's ability to transform herself and bring joy to those around her was unmatched, her costumes a symbol of her creativity and zest for life. She also adorned her everyday clothes by embellishing with crochet appliques or adorning with sequins and embellishments, each piece a testament to her artistic eye.

Her love for fashion-a passion "M'am Mall'' shared with her granddaughters, Siera and Chablis, during their weekly TV and dress-up nights-resulted in cherished moments of breathless laughter, silliness, and inventive fashion.

In her final years, Alzhimers progressed quickly for Susie but her "Donnie's" vigilant care ensured that her days were filled with love and dignity; whilst truly embodying the vows of 'in sickness and in health.' The family extends their deepest gratitude to Pap Pap Donnie for his devotion and tireless care-a testament to the enduring power of their love.Throughout these years, Susie was supported by knowledgeable and compassionate nurses and caregivers. The family is especially grateful to Sandy Sperry, whose dedication, kindness, and countless hours of care over more than five years brought comfort and companionship to Susie and peace of mind to those who loved her.

Susie was preceded in death by her brother, Buck M. Robbins; her daughter, Christina Smith; her brothers-in-law, Larry Wright and Kenneth "Kenny" Wright; and her nephew, Neal Wright.

She is survived by her loving husband, Donovan Wright; her son-in-law, Bruce Smith, and his wife, Laura Logsdon; and her grandchildren, Siera Wigfield and her husband, Brandon, and their children, Jasper and Carmelita Juanita; Bryce Smith; and Chablis and Ethan Troutman and their children, Noah, Callie, Jansen, and Remi.

Susie will also be fondly remembered by her sister-in-law, Yvonne "Tootles" Robbins, and her son, Jonathan Robbins; her sister-in-law, Jane Wright, wife of the late Kenneth "Kenny" Wright, and their sons, Nick Wright and the late Neal Wright; and her brother-in-law, Bill Wright, and his wife, Leslie Wright, and their children, Stewart Wright, Blair (née Wright), and Alexandra Pagliano (née Wright). She also leaves behind her cherished cousin, Lloyd Batista, who was like a brother to Donovan, as well as many friends.

Susie's life was a radiant example of love, creativity, and courage. As we say goodbye, we celebrate the joy she brought to others and the lasting impression she left on all who knew her.
