Judith May (Helmick) Growden, 80, passed away on June 9, 2026 at UPMC, Western Maryland, surrounded by her family.

Born on June 17, 1945 in Cumberland, MD to the late Loring B. and Viola B. (Myers) Helmick. In addition to her parents, Judith was preceded in death by her son, James Ross Growden, Jr.; and brothers, Donald and Roy Helmick.

Judy attended Fort Hill High School. After school, she began her working career at Cumberland Sewing Factory as a seamstress before moving on to work at Arbitron, a television surveying company. She was self-employed for 5 years, as a housekeeper and another 15 years as a caregiver for people in need. Judy loved reading and watching NASCAR races on television. She attended Friendship Haven Church in Cumberland, MD.

Judy is survived by her husband, James Ross Growden, Sr.; daughters, Sonya May Potts and husband, Terry and Patricia Diane Martin and husband, James; 8 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great grandchild.

Family and friends will be received on Saturday, June 13, 2026 at Scarpelli Funeral Home, 108 Virginia Avenue, Cumberland, MD 21502 from 11:00 am until 1:00 pm. A funeral service will immediately follow at 1:00 pm.

Interment will immediately follow in Fellowship Cemetery.
