GRANTSVILLE, MD June Elaine (Whiteman) Diehl, 83 of Cresaptown passed from this life to her Heavenly Home with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ on Thursday, January 12, at the Goodwill Mennonite Nursing Home.Born October 25, 1933, June was the daughter of the late Ray Whiteman and Emma (Arnold) Whiteman. She is also preceded in death by her husband, Howard F. Diehl in 2001. They had been married fifty years and celebrated by renewing their wedding vows. She was also preceded by her three brothers, Maurice Whiteman, Dane Whiteman and Ralph Whiteman .She was the last surviving member of the Ray Whiteman family.June was a 1951 graduate of Allegany High School. She and Howard were high-school sweethearts and were married on March 9, 1952. She retired from the Allegany County Board of Education after working twenty-five years as a teacher's aide. June taught special needs children at South Penn Elementary. During her years there, she developed many close friendships with the children and staff. She was a member of Cresaptown United Methodist Church for over fifty years and also a member of the Red Hat Society.Surviving are her two children, a daughter Dee Ann Mercier and husband Gregg, Newark ,Delaware and a son, Michael Diehl and wife, Carla of LaVale, MD ; three grandchildren, Christopher Bryan Dignan, Cumberland, Sarah Beth Diehl of Cockeysville, MD and Michael Brian Diehl of LaVale. She is also survived by her sisters-in law; Bette Whiteman, Regina Whiteman, Martha Whiteman, Nancy Nemith and her husband, Bill as well as many nieces and nephews; and her very special friend, her cat "Daisy."Her grandchildren were the light of her life and time spent with them brought her immense joy. She attended their sporting events, band competitions, dance recitals, scouting events and family camping trips. June made sure she captured these special memories for the family by always being ready to snap a picture or record on video.Her life will be celebrated with visitation on Tuesday, January 17 at 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at the Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A., 15205 McMullen Highway, Cresaptown, MD. The funeral service will follow with Rev Harold McClay, Jr. and Rev. Hal Atkins officiating. Interment will be in the Veteran's Section, next to her husband, at Restlawn Memorial Park, Cash Valley Road, LaVale.Pallbearers will be Christopher Dignan, Michael Diehl, Gregg Mercier, Andrew Baker, Jon Virts and David Shaffer.Her family wishes to express heartfelt gratitude for the care and compassion she received from the staff of Goodwill Mennonite Assisted Living and Nursing Home and Hospice of Garrett County, Inc.In honor of June's memory, the family requests contributions to the Cresaptown United Methodist Church.Condolences for the family may be left at www.scarpellifh.com
