Obituary

Kenneth E. Carder, 93, died of natural causes at home in Ridgeley, on Sunday, October 27, 2019. He was born June 30, 1926 to the late Thomas and Elma Carder. He was preceded in death by wife Evelyn; brothers, Lionel, Calvin and Oscar Carder; sister-in-law, Lillian; and niece, Joy. Ken is survived by his son, David A. Carder of Summerville, SC; and daughter, Pamela Thomas, Dunbar, WV; granddaughter, Cassandra Thomas; and partner of 28 years, Karen J. Bundy. Ken was a US Army veteran, serving as forward observer during World War II in the Pacific. After the war, he attended Davis and Elkins College. Earning a degree in chemistry, he worked for Hercules Inc. at ABL, Charleston SC and Salt Lake City Utah. After retirement, he operated Carder's Texaco station until 1991. He was a member of the VFW, the Scottish Rite, Summerville SC, and was an honorary member of the Short Gap fire department, where he helped with hoagie and gun bash fundraisers and played many hands of cards with friends. He enjoyed hunting and fishing, watching sports, especially Redskins and Steelers football and Nats baseball. The family wishes to thank Dr. Robert Welik and his office staff, the VA Home Based Primary Care Team, and WVU Medicine Hospice for their brief but compassionate care. Visitation will be held at the Scarpelli Funeral Home, 108 Virginia Avenue, Cumberland, on Saturday, November 2, 2019, from 4 to 6 pm. A memorial service will immediately follow at 6 p.m. with the Pastor Marshall Carder officiating. Military honors will be accorded by members of the Fort Cumberland Post 13 Honor Guard. Inurnment will be in Wesley Chapel Cemetery in Points, WV. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in his name to the American Heart Association, PO Box 3049 Syracuse, NY 13220-3049; or to any veteran's organization.
