Leo Francis Carder, 90, of Cumberland, went to be with his maker on December 22, 2024 at his home.
Born April 27, 1934, in Oldtown, MD on Bull Ring Ranch, he was the son of the late Noah S. and Ivy E. (Barns) Carder, Leo was their seventh of twelve children. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by four brothers and four sisters.
Leo graduated from Oldtown High School in 1955, along with his sweetheart Ruth Brown whom he married in 1957. Leo entered service in the United States Navy on June 27, 1955; he was stationed at the New London Naval Base, CT and served on several submarines till he retired after 20 years. Afterward he continued to serve his country as a mail handler with the U.S. Postal Service.
Leo was a member of the Oldtown VFW Post 9451 and the Knights of Columbus Council 5450.
Leo is survived by his loving wife of 67 years, Ruth Carder; a daughter, Kimberley Carder; a son, Stephen Carder and wife, Tina; grandchildren, Bryan Atkinson and wife, Sierra, Jacob and Issac Carder; his sisters, Mary Smith, Elizabeth Brooks, and Patricia Malamis; and large extended family including numerous great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Visitation will be Sunday, December 29th from 3:00 to 6:00 p.m. at Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A., 108 Virginia Avenue, Cumberland; a Christian Wake Service will be held at 5:30 p.m.
A Mass of the Christian Burial will be held Monday, December 30th beginning at 11:00 a.m. at St. Mary's Catholic Church, 300 E Oldtown Rd, Cumberland.
Military honors will be accorded by the American Legion Post 13 Honor Guard.
Interment will be in St. Mary's Cemetery.
