Obituary

Leopold "Lee" N. Gasparik, Jr., 78, of Wiley Ford, West Virginia, passed away on Saturday, January 22, 2022, at UPMC Western Maryland after a short illness. He was the beloved husband of Sheryl L. Gasparik. They shared 23 wonderful years together and were married almost 19 years. Born in Brooklyn, New York, he was the son of the late Leopold Gasparik and the late Mantinia "Victoria" (Palibos) Gasparik. Lee enlisted in the United States Marine Corps right out of high school and served two tours in Vietnam. Out of everything in his life, he was most proud to be a Marine and spoke often of how it changed and shaped the course of his life. "Once a Marine, always a Marine" was one of his favorite sayings. He was so proud to serve his country. Lee had a long, distinguished career in law enforcement. He joined the New York State Police as a State Trooper and was with the State Police, Troop L SP Riverhead for over 30 years in Riverhead, New York. He was on the Speed Task Force, and he also taught at the New York State Police Academy as an in-service and academy instructor in EVOC VASCAR, Radar, LASER, Visual Speed Estimation, and Court Testimony. He also was an Adjunct Criminal Justice Educator at John Jay College of Criminal Justice in Queens, NY. After retirement from the New York State Police, he joined the United States Marshals Service as a Deputy Marshal for 12 years until his retirement. Lee is survived by his wife, Sheryl (Schultz) Gasparik of Wiley Ford, West Virginia; his daughter, Nicole Gasparik, and son-in-law, Scott Cotterel of San Jose, California; his granddaughter, Alexandria "Lexie" Cotterel of San Jose, California; his brother, Carl Gasparik of East Quogue, New York; his mother-in-law, Karyn Schultz of Fort Collins, Colorado; his brother-in-law, Andy Keppley, and sister-in-law, Colleen Keppley of Wernersville, Pennsylvania; and his brother-in-law, Derek Schultz, and his sister-in-law, Mary Schultz, of Wellington, Colorado. He is also survived by his nieces and nephews; Isaac Schultz, Nate Schultz, Katie May Schultz, Anna Grace Schultz, Davis Keppley, Tyler Keppley, and Jaden Keppley. Lee had a lifetime passion for trains, and after moving to West Virginia, his favorite hobby was building an elaborate O'Scale Pennsylvania Railroad layout in his basement, and one of his biggest joys was sharing his railroad with others. He also enjoyed fitness and working out and living a healthy lifestyle. He was the most disciplined person one could ever meet in all aspects of his life. He also fiercely loved his rescue dogs, Captain, Sophie, and Hannah, and his cat, Charlie; and he loved spending time with his numerous friends and family.
