Obituary

(Marita) Joanne Conroy, 88, passed away on June 27, 2023. Her beloved husband, Edward Aloysius

"Ed" Conroy Jr., 91, passed away on March 27, 2026; together they made Ligonier, PA their home for

over 50 years.

Joanne and Ed were born in Cumberland, MD, where they attended high school. They met at the

Walsh-McCagh Pharmacy and married at St. Mary Catholic Church, Cumberland on September 10,

1955. Their marriage of more than 68 years was a testament to their deep devotion to one another, their

family, and their shared faith.

Joanne was born December 22, 1934 to the late Catherine Elizabeth (Martin) Johnson Brode and

Charles H. Johnson. Known for her warmth and welcoming spirit, she was a devoted wife, mother,

grandmother, and great-grandmother. Joanne owned and operated The Underneath clothing store in

Ligonier for 25 years, becoming a familiar and friendly presence in the community.

Ed was born January 7, 1935, to the late Edward Conroy Sr. and Mary (Reitmeier) Conroy. Like his

mother he worked supporting the smooth operation of hospitals and had a career in laboratory supply

sales. In retirement he worked alongside Joanne at The Underneath; a venture that reflected their shared

dedication to local business and community life.

Both were devoted to their family and found great joy in reunions, birthdays, and holiday gatherings.

They were active members of Holy Trinity Roman Catholic Church in Ligonier.

Joanne was preceded in death by her parents; her brother, Charles L. Johnson; and her sisters, Gertrude

(Johnson) Akers and Mary (Johnson) Grimm. Ed was preceded in death by his parents and his brother,

Joseph Conroy, husband of the late Helen (Wanless) Conroy.

They are survived by their children, Dennis Conroy, Mike Conroy, Steve Conroy, Brian Conroy, and

Cathy (Conroy) Laughlin and their spouses; 16 grandchildren; and 8 great-grandchildren. Joanne is

survived by her sister, Patricia (Johnson) Dimaio. Ed is survived by his sister Mary Ann Dech, widow

of the late Michael Dech.

In accordance with their wishes both were cremated, and inurnment will be in St. Patrick's Cemetery,

Fairview Ave, Cumberland, MD.

A graveside service will take place Friday, April 17, 2026 at 1:00 p.m. with Fr. Mark Carter, OFM Cap

presiding.
