Mary Dolores "Dorie" Dougherty, 93, of Cumberland, MD passed away peacefully October 16, 2026, with her daughter and very special friend Mary Rita Beck by her side at Egle Nursing and Rehab, Lonaconing, MD.
She was born March 25, 1933, in Cumberland, to the late John Henry and Marie Kasia (Kearney) Martin. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 67 years, Alfred Thomas Dougherty.
Dorie was a 1951 graduate of Ursuline Academy and served as Class President. She graduated from the Sacred Heart Hospital School of Nursing, Class of 1954. She then began her over forty year career in nursing at Sacred Heart Hospital, and briefly at the National Naval Medical Center (Walter Reed). She loved nursing and worked in many of the departments, and even met her husband Tom when he was her patient. She also worked on hospital planning committees to help improve patient care. She recalled working with Dr. Gina Glick in the establishment of an anesthesia recovery room. She enjoyed working in pediatrics, hospice and especially labor and delivery. She so enjoyed helping young mothers bring their babies into the world, and she ended her career working as a home health care nurse and as a certified lactation consultant.
She was a very active member of Saints Peter and Paul Parish. She often noted she received all of her sacraments in that beautiful church. As a parishioner, she participated in everything from prayer groups, school nurse, digitizing the church records, bereavement luncheon committee, and especially St. Anthony's Place. She continued her service to Our Lady of the Mountains Catholic Parish.
Surviving are her children, Martin Dougherty and wife Cindy of St. Albans, WV, Thomas Dougherty and wife JoLynne of Carnegie, PA, Diane Dougherty of Burke, VA, David Dougherty and wife Apryl of Flintstone, MD; grandchildren, Stuart, Rory, and Mary Kate Dougherty; a great-granddaughter Adalynn Nicole Dougherty (to appear any day now) daughter of Rory and partner Alexis Allott; her brother, John "Jack" Martin and wife Jeanie; brother-in-law, Frank Dougherty and wife Peggy; and her large extended family; and many friends.
