Obituary

Cumberland—Mary Louise Mattingly, 88, of Cumberland, passed away Thursday, March 16, 2023 at her home with her daughter, Marlene, by her side.

Born in Cumberland, MD, on May 17, 1934, she was the daughter of the late Hazel (Fraley) and Edgar L. Bailey. In addition to parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 66 years, Robert L. Mattingly, who passed away on March 28, 2022; brothers, Edgar (Gene) Bailey and wife, Dolores, and Ronald L. Bailey and wife, Emily; sisters, Dorothy Bailey, who passed away as an infant, and Phyllis Bailey; brothers-in-law, Carroll "Khaki" Mattingly and wife, Gail, and Paul E. Mattingly; nephew, Paul Robert Mattingly; and son-in-law, Jackson Brinkman.

Mary graduated from Fort Hill High School, class of 1952. Following high school, Mary was employed at Acme Markets, retiring after 30 years of service. Mary was a lifetime member of St. John's Lutheran Church. At the church, she was served as financial secretary, chair of the Altar Guild, member of MATCHES, and leader of the ladies craft group. Mary was a member of the South Cumberland Business and Civic Association, member and secretary of the Columbia Gas Retirees group, and she was a member and secretary of the St. John's Bowling League.

Mary's hobbies included gardening, feeding her backyard birds, and traveling. Mary and Bob traveled extensively, including two cross country trips with their daughter, Marlene. They also traveled to Ireland and England to visit relatives.

Mary is survived by her daughter, Marlene L. Brinkman; special sister, R. Eileen Bailey; nephews, Jeff Bailey and wife, Patty, Steve Bailey and wife, Shannon, Patrick Mattingly and wife, Melonie, and Thomas Mattingly; nieces, Deanne Stump and husband, Mike, Karen Moderacki and husband, Jeff, Linda Bane and husband, Mike, Sandi Mattingly and Ruth Coburn, Teddy Gurtler and husband, John, Connie Hauser and Gail Harvey. She is also survived by a number of great-nieces and nephews.

Friends will be received at the Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A., 108 Virginia Ave, Cumberland, on Monday, March 20, 2023 from 4-7 P.M. Funeral services will be conducted at the funeral home on Tuesday, March 21, 2023 at 11A.M. Friends will be received at the funeral home one hour prior to the service. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Park.
