Marybelle Light, formerly of Cumberland, MD, passed away peacefully Wednesday, July 5,
2023, at age 93, in Montgomery, Texas, with loving family at her side.
Marybelle was born on February 3, 1930, in Cumberland to parents Cornelius Jackson Bageant
and Lessa (Hovermale) Bageant and was the youngest of seven children. She was preceded in
death by son John Kirby Light, in 1981; husband of 69 years, Dr. John P. Light, in 2022; two
brothers, Harry L. Bageant and Cornelius Jackson "Pete" Bageant; and four sisters Mabel
Young, Virginia Bishop, Hazel Neus, Anna Lee Reed.
Marybelle was a graduate of Fort Hill High School, Class of 1948.
Marybelle worked in women's sportswear at Rosenbaum's retail store, later becoming assistant
to co-owner Mrs. Rosenbaum, and then moved into the Rosenbaum Business Office. Her
natural aptitude for finance caught the eye of Potomac Edison, who successfully recruited her to
join their Business Office.
She married John P. Light on February 21, 1953 and together they had three loving children,
Joni, Kirby, and Christopher.
While her husband attended University of Maryland Medical School, Marybelle founded a social
support and charitable group for the spouses. She continued similar work after returning to
Cumberland with her husband in the 1960's. She was a long-standing member of the Allegany
County Medical Auxiliary. Marybelle served in various officer roles in this group over the years
including President.
Mrs. Light was honored to have served as Chairman of the House of Delegates for the Allegany
County Medical Society (1982-1983). She was a member of the Memorial Hospital Auxiliary,
Women's Sports Club and The Civic Club.
Marybelle was an avid bridge player and enjoyed her friends in the various groups in which she
played. She loved hosting get-togethers at their home, shopping, and was proud to have one of
her large needlepoint canvases displayed at the Gordon-Roberts House.
She is survived by daughter Joni and her husband Tim Screen; son, Chris and wife Tawny;
granddaughters Jennifer Screen and fiancé Jonathan Chalos, and Zoë Light; grandson Alex
Sniff; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Friends will be received at the Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A., 108 Virginia Ave., on Saturday,
July 15th, from 10am to 11am. Funeral services will immediately follow at 11am.
Interment will be in Hillcrest Cemetery immediately following service.
The family requests those who wish to express sympathy to consider making a donation in
Marybelle's name to First Presbyterian Church, 11 Washington St., Cumberland, MD.
