Obituary

Michael Joseph Dougherty, age 82, passed away peacefully on December 11, 2020, due to complications from pneumonia. Born in 1938, Mike was the 8th of 9 children born to Emmett and Iva (nee Donoughe) Dougherty, and is survived by his sister, Kathleen Dougherty Houck, Springfield, VA; and his brothers Franklin E. and A. Thomas Dougherty, both of Cumberland. Mike is also survived by his children, Tina D. (Mark) Lymburner, Beth D. (Wayne) Reusch, and Michel Emmett Dougherty; his grandsons, Ian and Alec Reusch, and John and Tim Dougherty; as well as three great-grandchildren, Timothy, Avery, and Asher. Mike was born and raised in Cumberland, Maryland, graduated LaSalle class of 1956, then went to Pittsburgh, PA to attend Carnegie Mellon University (then known as Carnegie Tech). After earning a degree in Metallurgical Engineering, Mike enlisted in the U.S. Army and rose to the rank of 1st Lieutenant, serving as a commissioned officer in West Germany during the building of the Berlin Wall. After an honorable discharge, Mike worked for INCO and then as International Sales Manager at Copperweld Corporation, while also serving in the Army Reserves for 25 years. Mike's Army Commander noted his "very keen sense of duty and outstanding intelligence." His children remember his fairness, kindness and generosity along with how much he loved Disney World, gathering for holidays, huge family reunions, his dogs and sing-alongs. Mike was a devout Catholic, and made sure he donated to his church and to veterans. Family and friends will be received at the Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A., 108 Virginia Avenue, Cumberland, on Tuesday, December 15, 2020, from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. Graveside services will be conducted at the Maryland State Veteran's Cemetery, Rocky Gap, on Tuesday, at 2 p.m. with Deacon Dave Conley officiating.
