Obituary

Michael "Mike" Grabenstein, 65, of Cumberland, passed away on April 7, 2026, surrounded by his family.

Born on May 16, 1960, Mike was the son of Frank McKenzie Sr. and Mary (Platter) Grabenstein. He was a lifelong resident of the area and spent his entire career in the automotive industry. He began his career at the Maryland Avenue Sunoco and dedicated many years to his trade working in the service department at several local dealerships; he was currently employed part-time at Shaffer Ford. He was partly retired, enjoying more time with his family while still staying connected to the work he loved. He was known for his strong work ethic and the pride he took in everything he did.

Mike was preceded in death by his father, Frank McKenzie Sr.; his mother, Mary (Platter) Grabenstein; his stepfather, Joseph Grabenstein; his brothers, Frank McKenzie Jr. and Kenneth Grabenstein; and his sister, Toni Mayo.

He is survived by his loving wife, Michelle; his daughters, Britney Bernard and her husband Mitch, and Kirstie Conners and her husband Joe. He also leaves behind his sister, Sherri Weasenforth; his lifelong best friend, Roger Metty; his mother-in-law; many loving sisters-in-law and their spouses; brother-in-law; nieces and nephews; aunts and uncles; and cousins.

Mike had a special bond with his beloved dog, Stella, along with his favorite grandpuppies, Wiley, Wilson, and Ellie.

He had a true passion for cooking and took great joy in sharing meals with those he loved—always encouraging everyone to try what he made and never letting anyone leave without a to-go box in hand. Above all, Mike loved his family more than words can express. He especially cherished time spent together at his favorite place, Duck, NC where annual family vacations created memories that will be treasured forever.
