CUMBERLAND Michael G. Ruppenkamp, 71, of Cumberland, passed away on Thursday, May 3, 2018 at the Western Maryland Regional Medical Center.Born on May 3, 1947, in Cumberland, he was the son of Edward L. and Mary (Steigerwald) Ruppenkamp. Michael was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, George T. and Edna (Hammond) Steigerwald; and his paternal grandparents, John G. and Clara (O'Neal) Ruppenkamp.Michael was a 1965 graduate of LaSalle High School where he was a member of the band; leading to the formation of his own band, The Majestics. He earned his bachelor's degree from Frostburg State University in 1974. Michael spent his career as a claims consultant for several companies including Nationwide, from which he retired. He was a lifetime member of SS Peter and Paul Church, Our Lady of the Mountains Parish, in which he was an active volunteer, including serving as a lector and parish council president. Michael was an active member of the Alhambra Wamba Caravan #89. He enjoyed serving in many roles, including that of past Grand Commander.Michael enjoyed spending time with his children and grandchildren, including coaching baseball and basketball, and serving as Scout Master of Troop #10 in the Potomac Council. His children have fond memories of practicing sports with him in the yard, and having him attend all of their activities. He was an extremely active golfer at Cumberland Country Club, woodworker, gardener, reader, and fan of Notre Dame and Pittsburgh sports since childhood. He was a lifelong train enthusiast, which most recently included building model railroad displays for his grandsons.In addition to his parents, he is survived by his wife of 46 years, Peggy A. (Muth) Ruppenkamp; daughter, Katie Roberts and husband Justin; and son, Michael J. Ruppenkamp and wife Gina. He was Pappy to his four grandsons, Jack and Sam Ruppenkamp, and Joey and Jake Roberts. He is also survived by his sisters, Marilyn Felten and husband Eddie, Terry Whitworth and husband Horace, and Elaine Cessna; as well as many nieces and nephews.Family and friends will be received at the Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A., 108 Virginia Avenue, Cumberland, on Sunday May 6, 2018 from 4-7 p.m. The Alhambra Crescent Service will be conducted at 6:30 p.m., followed by the Christian Wake at 6:45 p.m.Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at the Shrine of SS Peter and Paul, 125 Fayette Street, Cumberland, on Monday, May 7, 2018 at 10:00 a.m.Interment will be in St. Mary's Cemetery.Charitable donations in the memory of Michael can be made to Our Lady of the Mountains Parish, 300 E Oldtown Road, Ste #2, Cumberland, MD 21502.Condolences for the family may be left at www.ScarpelliFH.com
