Miriam Douglas "Mim" Sanner, 97, of Richmond, Va., an Allegany County native who never shed her deeply-felt identity as a Marylander, despite her last years in Virginia, passed away Wednesday, Feb. 2, 2022.
Mim and her husband, Chauncey "Clancy" Sanner, shared their lives for 59 years until Clancy's death in 2007.
She is survived by daughter, Janet Ellen Anderson and son-in-law, Philip Anderson; and grandson, Christopher; daughter, Peggy Sanner and son-in-law, Carl Tobias; daughter, Carol Sanner Mitchell and son-in-law, Phil Mitchell; granddaughter, Grace Mitchell Tada; grandson-in-law, Kosuke Tada; and grandson, Alan Mitchell; and son, Eric Sanner and daughter-in-law, Patti Sanner; granddaughter, Haley Sanner; and grandson, Grayson Sanner. Mim is also survived by many nieces and nephews and their families, of whom she always remained fond.
Mim was a dedicated member of the congregation of St. Paul's Lutheran Church, in Cumberland, where she served in many capacities over the years. A lifelong student nourished by her love of reading, Miriam had a special interest in history, especially of Allegany County, Scotland, and the rest of the British Isles.
Mim was committed to broadening educational opportunities for others. She served for many years on the Maryland State Board for Community Colleges, appointed by Maryland Governor William Donald Schaefer. She believed deeply in the mission and importance of Allegany College, relishing her multi-year service as chair and member of the college's board of trustees.
Mim loved to entertain at home in La Vale, at the beloved Deep Creek Lake cottage, and by the beach in North Carolina. Her family and many dear friends will fondly remember Miriam's formidable culinary skills and love of good food, her zest for travel, her gift for friendship, and her dignity and grace even in difficult times.
The family will have a burial service at the Maryland State Veterans Cemetery, Rocky Gap, and a memorial service will be planned for the summer.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Sanner Award for Outstanding Teaching at Allegany College.
