Patrick Douglas "Doug" Shaffer, 43, of King George, VA, passed away Wednesday, June 30, 2026.

Born March 4, 1983, in Silver Spring, MD, he was a loving son of Hugh B. and Tamara "Tammy" G. (Gibson) Shaffer, a loving brother of Michael Ryan Shaffer, and a loving father of his son, Devin Anthony Shaffer. He is also survived by his grandmother, Edith (Bolyard) Dagorn; and numerous caring aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.

Doug was preceded in death by his grandfather, William Perry Shaffer, Sr.; his grandmother, Joann Boden Shaffer; his grandfather, Roger Keith Gibson; and his uncle, Willam Perry Shaffer, Jr.

Doug attended the University of North Carolina Wilmington and graduated with a degree in biology/pre-med. Doug had an extreme passion for his studies in biology; especially wildlife, nature and healthcare. He wished his life to be used as an example and motivation for others who struggle with alcoholism and addiction to not let a chemical substance determine the course of their lives. Although his decades-long struggle with alcoholism has ended, it was marked by periods of sobriety in recovery communities all over the east coast where his contributions and service were highly valued. He should be remembered in spirit by his always positive attitude and how he loved every person, no matter who they were or what they did. His compassion for the well-being of others and advocacy for justice and care for all people was easily recognizable by anyone in his presence. He was a kind, compassionate, caring and thoughtful person who spread love wherever he went.

In high school, Doug was a record-setting swimmer and continued to enjoy swimming and playing competitive sports throughout his life.

A believer in Jesus Christ and a devout Catholic, Doug is at peace in heaven with God. Per Doug's wishes, services will be held outdoors at Hillcrest Burial Park where he will rest amongst previously passed family members.

Fr. Ryan Schmeltzer, OFM, Cap. will preside over a graveside service at Hillcrest Burial Park, 10901 Mason Rd NE, Cumberland, MD, on Wednesday, July 8 at 2:00 p.m.
