Obituary

Richard "Dick" Dale Helmick, 87, of Cresaptown, MD, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, peacefully went to be with Jesus late morning Thursday, June 20, 2024, surrounded by his family.

Dick was born December 12, 1936, in Cumberland, Maryland to parents Carlton and Melda Helmick.

From a young age, he exhibited a zest for life and an infectious sense of humor that would become his most endearing attributes. Dick worked for Walter N. Yoder & Sons as a superintendent for 43 years. Later in his life, he enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren as well as those involved in Kairos Prison Ministry. No matter where he was spending his time, Dick's love for Jesus and others impacted those around him.

Dick was known as a family man. He was a devoted husband of 62 years to his wife, JoAnn, and a loving father to his daughter, Lesa, and son, Dale. He is remembered by his many grandchildren as a generous and playful man who always found a way to make them smile. Due to his fun-loving and ornery spirit, his grandchildren gave him the nickname "Silly Pappy."

Dick's legacy is one of love, laughter, dedication, and faith. He leaves behind a family and community enriched by his unwavering and undeniable love for Jesus. Those he left behind will continue to honor that legacy. He was preceded in death by his parents Carlton and Melda, his older brother Abe, and his daughter Lesa. He is survived by his wife JoAnn, his son Dale and his wife Marjorie, son-in-law Buck Dayton, 13 grandchildren, and 11 great-grandchildren, and a very large extended family.

A celebration of Dick's life will be held on Saturday, June 22 at 11 a.m. at Pinto Mennonite Church, 13822 Pinto Rd SW, Pinto, MD. The service will be led by Pastor Duane Fredricks and Phillip Dayton. Friends and family will be received 30 minutes prior to service. Inurnment will be in the Pinto Mennonite Cemetery.
