Richard "Dick" Shewbridge, 84, of Cumberland, passed away on Monday, September 7, 2026 surrounded by his loving family.

Born February 3, 1942, he was the son of the late Ersal Shewbridge and Virginia (Andrews) Shewbridge. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers, E.J. "Jack" Shewbridge, Bob Shewbridge, and David Kenney; and his sister, Pam Bailey.

Dick proudly served his country in the United States Navy following high school.

He was well known for his incredible work ethic. Dick retired from PPG Industries after 35 years of dedicated service. Shortly after retirement, he went to work for Tractor Supply Company, where he spent another 17 years. The job was a natural fit for Dick and went hand in hand with his lifelong love of farming and tractors. He especially enjoyed raising Black Angus cattle and took great pride in caring for them at the farm. Dick also had a lifelong passion for gardening, and his green thumb earned him first-place honors year after year at the Allegany County Fair for his vegetables.

Dick loved deer hunting and spending time outdoors. Another favorite tradition was his annual vacation to Ocean City, Maryland, where he enjoyed surf fishing and eating at Phillips Restaurant.

He had a love for old cars and was especially proud of his 1960 Corvette. Dick and Carol enjoyed taking the Corvette to car shows together, creating many special memories along the way.

Above all else, Dick loved his family. He is survived by the love of his life and wife of 64 years, Carol; daughter, Debbie; son, Richard "Richie" Jr.; granddaughters, Lauren Growden and husband David and Tanya Palmer and husband Bryan; great-grandchildren, Issac, Emory, Hunter, Ryan, and Brenden; brother, Larry Shewbridge and wife Betty; and numerous nieces and nephews, extended family members and friends who will deeply miss him.

Dick will be remembered for his strong work ethic, his love of farming and the outdoors, his devotion to his family, and the many memories he created with those he loved. His life was one built on hard work, family, and the simple things that brought him happiness.

Friends will be received at the Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A., 108 Virginia Avenue, Cumberland on Monday, September 14, 2026 from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm.

A funeral service will be held at the Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A., Cumberland on Tuesday, September 15, 2026 at 11:00 am with Chaplain Paul Demers officiating.

Interment will be in the Sunset Memorial Park. Military Honors will be accorded by the Fort Cumberland Post 13 Honor Guard.

Pallbearers will be Richie and Larry Shewbridge, Bryan and Hunter Palmer, and David, Emory, and Issac Growden.

In lieu of flowers, contributions be directed to UPMC Dialysis Center, 12502 Willowbrook Rd., Suite 250 Cumberland, MD 21502 in honor of Dick's memory.
