Rita Elizabeth Deetz better known as "Granny or Maw Deetz" 81 of Wiley Ford, WV went home to be with the lord and her loved ones on January 21 2025.

Born on February 11th 1943 in Cumberland, MD she was the daughter of the late John and Catherine Melvin. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband "Sonny" John Calvin Deetz III, two sisters Joan and Kitty, a brother Jimmy, a son "Skeeter" Kenneth J Deetz, and very special friend Wilma Helmick.

Granny was a 1963 graduate of Allegany High School. She enjoyed her years raising and taking care of her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. It didn't matter if you were related or not, she was "Granny or Maw Deetz" to everyone.

Granny's passion in life was fishing, watching her "kids" play sports, and ice cream dates. She was the happiest when she was "drowning worms" as she called it. She would sit for hours, and always out fish everyone around. When it came to sports, Granny was a number one fan. From watching her grandchildren and their friends, to her great grandson Colsen and his friends. She will truly be missed on the side lines, but we know she will be cheering them all on from above.

Surviving are her children Tammy Kenney (Bill), Todd Deetz (Melissa), Mike Deetz, and Sue Ann Deetz (Ed); grandchildren, Kendra, Jessica (Joe), Crystal, Andrew, Heather, Tyler, Michael, Adam, Zachary, Travis, and Darien; great grandchildren, Jennian, Kaylee, Liam, Garrett, Wyatt; a special great grandson, Colsen Lee, who was her little best friend and favorite ice cream date; siblings, Anna Sheetz and John Melvin; and a large extended family including numerous nieces and nephews.

Granny was always known as a fighter. From beating pancreatic cancer years ago, to fighting to stay with us as long as she could. She taught us how to love, and never give up no matter how hard the battle is. Now she can fish peacefully for the rest of her days, and spend the evenings in a rocking chair chatting away with her best friend Wilm, and the rest of her loved ones that she's missed for so long.

Visitation will be Friday, January 24th from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. at Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A. 108 Virginia Ave, Cumberland.

A funeral service will be Saturday, January 25th beginning at 1:00 p.m. at the funeral home, with Pastor Bruce McBride officiating.

Interment will be in Fort Ashby Cemetery.

We would like to thank the staff of Cumberland Health Care and UPMC Hospice for providing Granny with excellent care, and giving her a special place where she could spend her final days in peace and comfort. A Special thank you to Dr. Gupta, Dr. Zaman, and their staff for always going above and beyond when it came to her care.
