Ronald Herman Athey, 84, of Towson, MD, passed away on Sunday, September 20, 2026 at Gilchrist Hospice Care and went to be with our Lord.

Born October 15, 1941, in Cumberland, he was the son of the late Herman Charles Athey and the late Catherine Marie (Knick) Athey. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by step-mother, Betty (Dixon) Athey; grandson-in-law, Christopher Leidhecker and great granddaughter, Olivia Bupp.

Ron graduated from Fort Hill High School in 1959. He enlisted in the United States Marine Corps Reserves after graduation. He later moved to Towson, Maryland, and began his career in precision optics. He attended evening classes at Johns Hopkins University. In 1987 Ron and eight others started Nu-Tek Precision Optical Corporation in Harford County where he worked until his retirement in 2020 serving as President or Vice President most of those years.

Ron was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and a protector of all. He enjoyed reading the Bible, hunting, fishing, spending time with family, camping, scuba diving and he could fix just about anything. He is a member of the American Legion, a 3rd degree member of the Knights of Columbus and is a member of Immaculate Heart of Mary Church in Towson, Maryland.

Ron is survived by his loving wife, Jane (DePollo) Athey; daughter, Crystal Legaluppi and her husband Marco, daughter, Laura Bupp and her husband Robert; grandchildren, Corinne Leidhecker, Christopher Bupp and his wife Brenda, Gina Rinker and her husband Kevin Rinker, Andrew Legaluppi and his wife Caitlin; great granddaughter, Lydia Bupp; brother, Thomas R. Athey Sr. and wife Linda; nieces and nephews, Jeanne Mosmiller, Thomas Athey Jr. and wife Latasha, Clinton Athey and his wife Linda, and Marisa Wright and her husband Mike; and a large extended family.

Visitation will be held at the Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A., 15205 McMullen Highway, Cresaptown on Friday, September 25, 2026 from 7:00 pm until 9:00 pm.

A funeral service will be held at the Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A., Cresaptown on Saturday, September 26, 2026 at 11:00 am with Pastor Jimmy Knick officiating.

Interment will be in the Sunset Memorial Park in the Garden of the Nativity with a committal service preceding in the chapel. Military Honors will be accorded by the Fort Cumberland Post 13 Honor Guard.
