Shirley J. Mullaney, 85, of Cumberland passed away Saturday, March 30, 2024 at home.
Shirley was born August 18, 1938, in Sandy Spring, MD. She was preceded in death by her parents Byron and Laura (Clark) Jordan.
Shirley graduated in 1956 from Taneytown High School and Union Memorial Hospital School of Nursing, Baltimore, MD, class of 1959. She moved to Cumberland with her husband in 1960. Shirley began her career as a registered nurse at Sacred Heart Hospital on Decatur Street and continued to practice at the hospital for more than 12 years after it moved to Haystack Mountain. She left the hospital to work as a Home Health Care Nurse, and later as the manager of the Personal Care Program for the Allegany County Health Department. She retired with 20 years' service to the State of Maryland in 1999. During her years of practice, she was certified by the American Nurses Association in Geriatric Nursing.
Shirley was an advocate for improving healthcare in community settings. She participated in studies through the Havard School of Public Heath for over 30 years. Shirley took pride in knowing her participation helped researchers advance medicine in relationship to 30 various diseases.
Shirley was a member of Our Lady of the Mountains SS. Peter and Paul Parish, where she enjoyed helping others through volunteering as a parish nurse and preparing meals for the summer school program. Shirley also enjoyed volunteering as a docent for the Gordon-Roberts House.
She is survived by her husband Thomas H. Mullaney Jr; daughter, Kimberly A. Mullaney, sons, Thomas L. Mullaney (Terry), Brian S. Mullaney (Trudie), and Michael G. Mullaney; grandchildren, Meghan A. Vestal (Benjamin), Lauren E. Simpson (Ethan), and Grace Mullaney; great-grandchildren, Emma Yukta Vestal and Ella Mae Simpson. Shirley is also survived by brothers Ray Jordan (Mary Ann), Dale Jordan (Ursula), and sister, Judith Jordan (Derek Fiedler).
Friends will be received at Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A. 108 Virginia Ave, Cumberland, on Sunday, April 7, 2024 from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m.
A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated on Monday, April 8, 2024 at 11:00 a.m. at the Shrine of Saints Peter and Paul, 125 Fayette Street, Cumberland. Interment will immediately follow at SS. Peter and Paul Cemetery, Cumberland.
Shirley's family would like to thank Dr. Mary Riley, Hospice and all the wonderful nurses and caregivers. Their kindness and professionalism were very much appreciated. Special thank you to Sky, Mae, and Paulette for their dedication, support and comforting care during some very difficult times.
