Obituary

CUMBERLAND – Shirley Ann (Shives) Rice Deshong, 85, of Cumberland, passed away on Wednesday, October 16, 2024 at Sterling Care Frostburg Village.

Born June 6, 1939, in Hancock, MD, she was a daughter of the late Irving Shives and Edna (Faith) Thompson. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, Joseph William Rice; second husband, Lindy Ellis DeShong; son, Joseph William Rice, Jr.; half brother, Harold Shives; and son-in-law, Raymond Martin.

Shirley attended Fort Hill High School. She went on to work at Christopher's Photo Lab and to take care of her household as a dedicated homemaker. Shirley loved her family and, as a woman of faith, loved the Lord.

Shirley leaves behind her children, Diana Martin and Keith Rice (Denise); grandchildren, Shane Martin (Sheena), Brison Martin (Shannon), Bradley Martin (Caitlin), Katie Mallow (Levi), Keith Rice, Jr. (Chloe); great-grandchildren, Laina, Ava and Aubrey Martin, Luke, Rhyan, and Hudson Martin, Keith Rice III, Carson Rice, Weston and Emily Mallow; several nieces and nephews.

The family would like to extend their sincere gratitude to all of the nurses, doctors, and aides of Sterling Care Frostburg Village for their caring and compassionate care. Thank you also to UPMC Western Maryland Hospice Services. And, a very special thank-you to Shirley's niece, Terry Dillon and her sister-in-law, Ellen Rice, for all of their care and assistance.

In accordance with her wishes, all services will be private.

Interment will be in Sunset Memorial Park.
