Susanne Jeanette Cosner, 78, of Cumberland, MD died while holding her daughter's hand on Tuesday, July 28, 2020. She was able to spend her last days with her daughters and grandchildren. She was greatly loved and will be sadly missed. Born May 5, 1942, she was the daughter of the late John R. Shoup, Sr., and Thursa A. (Wilson) Shoup. She was also preceded in death by sisters-in-law Teresa Shoup and Connie Shoup and nephew Richard "Emmitt" Orndoff. Sue grew up in Cresaptown, MD to an intact family. Her mother was a stay-at-home mom and her father held a high-level position at the Celanese plant, where he developed several patents. Her brothers were into mischief, and she was never bored growing up, as she described always being entertained. She graduated from Allegany High School before attending college. She earned a bachelor's degree in English, with a minor in history, from Frostburg State Teacher's College in 1965. She later earned a master's degree in reading and was a certified reading specialist. To her family, she was also known to be a part of the grammar police. Sue taught English for many years at Saint Patrick's Catholic School in Cumberland, MD and in the Allegany County public schools. She went back to college and earned another master's degree, which was in deaf education, and she became certified in American Sign Language. She then taught English at the West Virginia Deaf and Blind School in Romney, WV for 27 years before reluctantly retiring 6 years ago. She enjoyed teaching and being around her students. She was loved by many of them and stayed in contact even after they graduated and she retired. Sue is survived by her daughters Kimberly S. Cammarata, and husband Michael Cammarata, and Tracy L. Cosner-Shepherd, and husband William Shepherd, as well as, her granddaughter Riley L. Shepherd and grandson Bryson R. Shepherd, all of Cumberland, MD. Sue was the one and only "Gangay" to her grandchildren. She loved spending time with her family, but especially with her grandchildren. She went to all of their school functions and extra-curricular activities throughout their childhood and saw them almost every day when they were growing up since she lived by them. Her grandson was also a big help to her in the last several years, frequently spending time hanging out with her and then staying the night in her home. Sue was fortunate recently, too, to spend a lot of time with her oldest daughter and her granddaughter while recuperating from a hip fracture in her daughter's home in Virginia. Both of her daughters were educated, and she was happy to see Riley graduate from the University of Maryland and to know of Bryson's recent graduation from Frostburg State University. Education was always important to her, and she was very proud of them. Sue is also survived by four younger brothers John Shoup, Jr; David Shoup; Robert Shoup; and William Shoup, and wife Janice, and honorary brother Mike Izer, as well as many nieces and nephews and their families. She spent a lot of time with her brother John "Hank" over the last couple of years. They dined out together and spent many hours talking, which was Sue's favorite pastime. She loved to talk, and could do so at great lengths, until suffering a stroke in October 2019. She also enjoyed shopping, which she often did with her daughters and her friend Mary Ann, and she enjoyed gardening. Scarpelli Funeral Home is in charge of her memorial arrangements. She will be cremated and honored privately at a graveside ceremony at Frostburg Memorial Park in Frostburg, MD. At her request, her remains will be buried beside her father, whom she adored, at her parents' gravesite. There will not be any viewing services.
