Gaithersburg – Thomas H. Horn, Sr., 92, of Gaithersburg, MD, formerly of Cumberland, MD, passed away on Wednesday, December 25, 2024 at Sunrise of Frederick.

Born March 16, 1932, in Hagerstown, MD, he was the son of the late Ernest R. and Nannie M. Horn. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his loving wife, Junia M. (Neff) Horn; son, Kurt D. Horn; brother, Charles D. Horn; sisters, Mary L. Poffenberger and D. Elaine Parker.

Tom was a 1950 graduate of Hagerstown High School and then served in the U.S. Army from 1952 to 1954 80th Ordnance Co. Nancv, France. He went on to graduate from Allegany Community College in 1970.

He worked at the Kelly-Springfield Tire Plant for 29 years as a manager in the Product Distribution Center. He also worked at Firestone Tire and Rubber Company for eight years.

He was a member at First Presbyterian Church, Martinsburg, WV, where he served two terms as an elder on the Session. He was a former member First Presbyterian Church, Cumberland, MD, at which he served four terms on the Session. He was very active in the mission activities in both churches. Upon retirement in 1995, he and his wife, Junia, left to be Volunteers in Mission for the Presbyterian Church USA and served 21 months at Sheldon Jackson College in Sitka, AK. Upon return, they served as representatives of Sheldon Jackson College to promote the Volunteers in Mission opportunities. He and Junia gave presentations from Clearwater, FL, to Clearwater, MN.

He also served in Merida, Mexico (Yucatan Peninsula), Project Verdad in Laredo on two short-term work-study trips.

Other achievements include national winner of the Kelly-Springfield Spirit Aware in 1980. After retiring, he relocated and continued volunteering several years tutoring as a PASS tutor of elementary students in math and reading. He was a volunteer and supporter of the Community Free Clinic in Hagerstown, MD.

Tom is survived by his son, Thomas H. Horn, Jr. and wife Linda, of Eldersburg, MD; daughters, Catherine M. Tschudy and husband, David, of York, PA., Annette H. Seiler and husband, John, of Gaithersburg, MD; daughter-in-law, Kim R. Horn, of Plano, TX; sisters, Anna F. Stup, of Fredericksburg, VA, and Ethel R. Schmidt, of Hagerstown, MD, Betty College of State Line, PA; grandchildren, Tom Horn III, Andrew Horn, Joseph Horn, Megan Horn, Kendall Horn, Olivia Horn, Michael Tschudy, Rachel Hughes, Anna Conaway, and Rebecca Horgan; 13 great-grandchildren.

Private interment with immediate family present will be in MD State Veterans Cemetery. Military honors will be accorded by Ft. Cumberland Post 13 Honor Guard.

A Celebration of Life, open to all friends and family, will be held at First Presbyterian Church, 220 South Queen Street, Martinsburg, WV 25401 on Monday, December 30, 2024 at 3:00 p.m. with Pastor Rufus Burton officiating.
