Cumberland—Van E. Gaus, 56, of Cumberland, passed away while at work in West Virginia on Tuesday, June 25, 2024.

Born on March 26, 1968, he was the son of Edward E. Gaus, of Cumberland, and the late Carolyn (Friend) Gaus. In addition to his mother, he was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Geraldine and Van Johnson.

Van was a graduate of Fort Hill High School, class of 1986. While in high school, Van was a member of the basketball and baseball teams. Following high school, Van attended Allegany College of Maryland and Frostburg State University. At Allegany College, Van was a member of the baseball team.

Van began his career at United Parcel Service in 1989. Presently, he was working the UPS Route in West Virginia. Van was a member of Christ United Methodist Church. His family was Van's priority. He especially enjoyed nature walks with his dogs, bike riding on the Allegheny Passage, fishing on the Potomac River, and canoeing. A sports enthusiast, Van followed all kinds of sporting events.

In addition to his father, Van is survived by his wife of 32 years, Cindy (Manges) Gaus; daughter, Lexi E. Gaus; son, Dalton V. Gaus (Lauren Verba); brother, Mark A. Gaus (Zach); sisters-in-law, Kris Martin (Paul) and Nikki Manges; brother, Bruce L. Hill (Dana); nieces, Emma Gaus (McKenzie), Lydia Gaus, Meleah Martin (Katelyn), Rayel Wright (Joel), Rian Wright (Dan Pirrone), and Cheyenne Hill; nephews, Sean Hill, and Jonah Gaus; great-nephew, Josiah.

At Van's request, he will be cremated. Not being one for ceremony, Van would have requested a celebration of his life which will take place on Saturday, July 13, 2024 from 5-8 P.M. at the 1812 Brewery on Mason Road.
