Virginia Catherine Wright, 98, of Cumberland, passed away on February 26, 2025, at Devlin Manor Nursing Home.
Born June 22, 1926 in Cumberland, she was the daughter of the late Clarence W. and Margaret (Wolf) Owens. Preceded in death by her husband, James O. Wright, Sr.; a son, James O. Wright Jr.; siblings, Dorothy L. Hawse, Clarence W. Owens, Jr., Leroy F. Owens, Charles R. Owens, Paul E. Owens, Albert C. Owens, Kenneth O. Owens; and a foster sister, Mildred Derlan.
Virginia was a 1944 graduate of Fort Hill High School and a graduate of Memorial Hospital School of Nursing in 1947. She was a member of the New Covanant United Methodist Church, President of United Methodist Women, Vice-President of Administrative Board of Church and a Former President of Grace United Methodist Church Administrative Board.
She was a Parish Nurse, Lay Speaker at the church, People caring for the People, Chair of Education Committee of the District United Methodist Church, Volunteer at the Blood Bank for the America Red Cross, a Sunday school faithful worker class at New Covenant. She was a member and former Chaplain and President of the Salvation Army Auxiliary and a Chaplain with NARVRE. In the summer she would attend Springfield United Methodist Church.
Surviving is a son, Michael A. Wright and wife Margaret; a daughter in law, Kay Wright; five grandchildren, James O. Wright, III and wife Nicole, G. Christian Wright, Lucy K. Wright, Megan L. McClafferty and husband Brendan, Michael A. Wright Jr. and wife Shannon; sister in laws, Evelyn Kelly and husband John Bache, Donna Owens; nephew, Joe Kelly Jr. and wife Patricia; niece, Vickie Bartholomaus; and her extended family including numerous nieces and nephews from the Owens family.
Visitation will be Sunday, March 2nd from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. at Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A., 108 Virginia Ave, Cumberland.
A funeral service will be held Monday, March 3rd, beginning at 1:00 p.m., at the funeral home, with Rev. Janice Leith officiating. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service.
Interment will be with her husband at the MD Veterans Cemetery at Rocky Gap, Flintstone, MD.
The family would like to extend their sincere gratitude to the staff of Devlin Manor for their devoted and genuine care they shown to Virginia.
