Walter C. "Buddy" Harper, of Cumberland, passed away Tuesday, July 16, 2024 at Martinsburg Veterans Nursing Home.
Born on January 2, 1935, in Cumberland, he was the son of the late Clarence H. and Ruth D. (Humbertson) Harper. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his two sisters, Dorothy Porter and Yvonne Kinser.
Walter is survived by three children, Walter C. Harper, Jr, Royce Harper; step-daughter, Dena Bridges; seven step-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
He was a 1956 graduate of Fort Hill High School. He enlisted into the U.S. Marine reserve for two years then got drafted into the U.S. Army as a MP at the rank of specialist-5, with an honorable discharge. He retired early as an iron worker due to an accident.
Walter was an active member of Davis Memorial Methodist Church.
He enjoyed spending time with Susan Kline, his partner of 25 years, and socializing everywhere he went.
Friends will be received at the Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A., 108 Virginia Avenue, Cumberland on Tuesday, July 23, 2024 from 10:00 a.m. until 12:00 p.m. A funeral service will immediately follow at 12:00 p.m. with Rev. Robert Pierson officiating.
Military honors will be accorded by the American Legion Post 13 Veterans Honor Guard.
Interment will be in Sunset Memorial Park.
Lieu of flowers the memorial contributions are asked to be made to Davis Memorial United Methodist Church, 14300 Uhl Hwy SE, Cumberland, MD 21502.
