It is with heavy heart that the family of William Francis Baker announce his passing on January 15, 2024 at 103 years of age! Born November 22, 1920 in Cumberland, he was one of three children. He was preceded in death by his two brothers. He is survived by his loving wife of 68 years, Erma Jean Baker and daughter Diane Baker Tucker and husband Gene Tucker of Charlotte, NC.

Bill, as everyone called him, graduated from Allegany High School in Cumberland, MD in 1938. His first job was at Speelman Ice Cream Co.

During WWII, he served in the Navy as part of Naval Intelligence.

From 1942 – 1962, Bill was a member of the Maryland State Police achieving the rank of Sergeant. In 1962, Bill was appointed County Investigator for the Allegany County States Attorney's Office. After retiring from that position, he became a private investigator. During his criminal justice career, Bill was also an instructor at Allegany College in the Criminal Justice Program for 20 years.

He met the love of his life, Jean, at age 34. He was a confirmed bachelor, but she won his heart and they married in a double wedding with Jean's sister Eileen. Their first date was at an Elks dance that they still fondly remembered.

Bill was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church, Cumberland Council Knights of Columbus #586, Chief Justice Taney 4th Degree, life member of the Cumberland Eagles and the American Legion Ft Cumberland Post #13.

Bill and Jean enjoyed many nice vacations to Europe (their favorite destination) as well as cruises and trips to Las Vegas, Aruba, California, etc. They enjoyed cooking together and made so many lavish meals in their house for friends and family. Bill enjoyed reading two newspapers daily and reading books from the library. Bill was known for his love of anything chocolate … and lots of it !

Due to his wishes, Bill will be cremated and buried at Rocky Gap. There will be no services or visitation at this time.
