CUMBERLAND - William Thomas Raines, 77, beloved husband, father, and grandfather died on August 28, 2025. Born in Franklin, Maryland on September 13, 1947, he died at UPMC Western Maryland surrounded by family. He was the son of the late William and Janet Raines. He was preceded in death by four sisters: Helen, Pearl, Peggy, and Joan.

He is survived by his wife, Carolyn (Metz) Raines. His three sons: Brian (Jen), Eric (Misty), and Justin (Kerrie). He is also survived by 7 grandchildren: Jeremy Raines, Jayna Raines, Isabelle Merritt, Paisley Raines, Samuel Raines, Cora Raines, and William Raines as well as in-laws Bruce Metz (Sharon), Patty McIntyre (Stenton), Susie Fair (Marty).  Additionally, his family extends to many cousins, nieces, and nephews.

Known as Buzz or Bill to many, he worked 42 years at the paper mill in Luke, Maryland. He served in the United States Navy (1967-1969) as a fireman during the Vietnam war, being deployed to the pacific with final assignment to the USS Forrest Royal before being moved to reserve status.

He was a devoted Christian and attended the Church of God, a Worldwide Association. His favorite activities included deer hunting, fishing, and foraging for mushrooms. He was also an avid gardener and enjoyed the fruits of his labors.

He will be greatly missed.

A graveside memorial service will be held at 2:00 pm on September 14, 2025 with Pastor Scott Lord officiating, and will be in the Mountain View portion of the Laurel Hill Cemetery and Mountain View Cemetery in Barton, Maryland. A gathering of family and friends will be held at Freedom Christian Church at 936 Winifred Road, Cumberland, MD after the service at approximately 3:00 pm. In the event of inclement weather, Freedom Christian Church will be the sole location at 2:00 pm for service and fellowship following.
