CUMBERLAND – William Arlen "Bill" Shaffer, 86, of Cumberland, passed away Friday, March 6, 2020, at UPMC Western Maryland Hospital. Born February 17, 1934, in Brookside, WV, he was the son of the late Clifton Franklin and Nica Faye (Sines) Shaffer. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by brother, Ronald Coleman Shaffer; sister-in-law, Rita Shaffer. Bill was a 1952 graduate of Fort Hill High School and a 1956 graduate of Advanced Navy Welding School. He proudly served his country in the United States Navy from 1953 to 1961 aboard the USS Nantahala. After 34 years of service, he retired from the maintenance department of WESTVACO. Surviving are his wife, Patricia Jean (Zirk) Shaffer; and three sons, Brian Arlen Shaffer, Cumberland, William Clifton Shaffer, Cumberland, and Randall Kevin Shaffer, Cumberland. Friends will be received at the Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A., 15205 McMullen Hwy SW, Cresaptown, MD, on Tuesday, March 10, 2020, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. A funeral service will immediately follow at 1 p.m. with Rev. Seth Wharton officiating. Interment will be in Restlawn Memorial Gardens. Military honors will be accorded by the Ft. Cumberland Post 13 Honor Guard.
